Table 3: The overall crime figures were published annually from 1869 within Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary [HMIC] report on the Counties and Borough Forces which dated from 1856. These have been supplemented in italics with data from the annual reports of the Manchester Watch Committee from 1858- 1865 & 1893-1901. The Summary Jurisdiction Act 1879 which had not been previously included before 1893 altered considerably the prosecution statistics as indictable and summary offences were categorised .Of note is the number of licensed premises in the city of which beer-houses remain fairly constant whilst the arrests for drunkenness decline slowly towards the end of the century.
